Matthew Conboy is an award-winning human filmmaker living in New York City.
Matt moved to New York in 2001 to study Creative Writing at the New School. In 2006 Matt and Jason Amos met while building effect pedals in Brooklyn. The two started the music venue Death By Audio a few months later. Matt went on to run Death By Audio for nearly 10 years with his partner Edan Wilber - hosting performances from artists such as The Dirty Projectors, Deerhoof, Dan Deacon, Future Islands, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Arto Lindsay, Les Savy Fav, Thurston Moore, Lightning Bolt and over 10,000 more.
His debut feature film, Goodnight Brooklyn - The Story of Death By Audio, was selected for the jury competition at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival. The documentary screened internationally, including a theatrical run in the US and film festivals in London, Copenhagen, New York, Taiwan, Tel Aviv, Cologne, Los Angeles and dozens of cities around the world. He went on to win Best International Documentary Feature at Melbourne Documentary Film Festival. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
His film Checking in at 20 profiling the drummers of the bands Deerhoof and Lightning Bolt was acquired by Pitchfork and features interviews with Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees and Michael Azerrad author of Our Band Could Be Your Life.
Matthew has filmed music videos and concerts for No Kill, Ty Segall, The Flaming Lips, Future Islands, Parquet Courts, Les Savy Fav, Spoon, Jeff the Brotherhood to name just a few.
His advertising client list includes Lincoln Financial, Mondavi, Brisk, Wells Fargo, Supercell, Intel, Abbott Pharmaceuticals, Microsoft, Tapad, Intel, RedBull, Bloomberg, Napa County, among many others.
Conboy consulted for Beerland’s Jukebox Cinema quarterly screening series in Austin Texas, hosting screenings and Q&As with filmmakers from around the world including the 10th anniversary screening of Wayne Coyne’s psychedelic sci-fi feature film Christmas on Mars.
